A beautiful antique hand-quilted quilt dating to approximately c1880–1890, featuring a classic Sixteen-Patch On Point pattern — a wonderful example of late Victorian American quiltmaking approximately 135–145 years old.
Pattern & Design Sixteen-patch blocks are set on point and framed by bold cheddar solid sashing and borders. The blocks are pieced from a rich variety of red and white cotton calico prints — floral, geometric, and small-scale — highly characteristic of the 1880s–1890s. A mauve/purple print border adds an elegant finishing touch. Cheddar, turkey red, and white calico is a classic, highly sought-after combination among antique quilt collectors.
Quilting Extensive fan/clamshell hand quilting is beautifully executed throughout, visible on both the front and the muslin backing. The fine, even stitching reflects the skill and care typical of the late Victorian period.
Size Approximately 66" x 73". This is a medium weight all cotton quilt.
Condition
This quilt presents as a clean quilt. The quilt top is vibrant and intact, with colors holding beautifully after more than a century. There are a few small spots close to the top edge.
The muslin backing has developed a warm, gentle patina along with some toning. Some of the cheddar color has carried through from the face to the back. Also there is some storage discoloration along the center fold line and a few scattered spots, as is typical for a cherished textile of this age.
Please review all photos carefully.
A Note for Collectors The turkey red calicoes, aniline-dyed mauve border, and bold cheddar sashing are all consistent with late Victorian textiles of the 1880s–1890s. This is a gorgeous piece of American textile history — a quilt that has been used and preserved over generations.
Perfect for gentle use or display.
This quilt is even better in person! A true primitive gem!
