Antique Lone Star (Star of Bethlehem) quilt, hand-pieced and hand-quilted throughout, signed and dated 1909.
This striking early 20th-century quilt features a bold red and yellow Lone Star set against an ivory ground, framed by a narrow pieced square border. The quilting is dense and even throughout, with scalloped motifs, feathered arcs, and fine hand-worked crosshatching, reflecting a high level of skill and craftsmanship.
Signed on the back:
Hand-embroidered “Mrs. M. E. Watkins – 1909.”
A small handwritten family note remains attached to the reverse and is believed to have been added later by a descendant. The note is not original to the quilting but documents family ownership and has been left intact as part of the quilt’s history.
Condition:
Very good antique condition. The front displays beautifully with strong fabrics and attractive age-appropriate toning. No holes or tears. The back shows gentle toning and faint shadowing consistent with early 20th-century quilts. No structural issues observed.
Size: Approx. 73” x 77” (see photos).
This is an authentic antique textile, handmade over a century ago. As with all early quilts, gentle wear and minor variations are part of its character, history, and authenticity.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
This is a gorgeous quilt, even better in person!
